Inaugural Fashion Edition Leads to Dream Jobs (She Created “Gumi” Bracelets!)

At the Collegian: Created the paper’s first four-page fashion edition. “I borrowed clothes from the local shops and asked several of the students to model them,” she said.

After graduation:

  • First female to sell advertising for the Call-Chronicle Newspapers in Allentown, Pa.
  • Sales manager and advertising manager for Lerner’s Department Store, Northampton, Pa.
  • Copywriting positions at NYC ad and fashion agencies

Claims to fame:

  • Editorial promotion coordinator at Mademoiselle magazine. “I wrote fashion show scripts for the thousands who would attend, chose colors for the upcoming season and gave them names, and wrote a monthly fashion report for the college crowd,” she said. “I also reported on the Paris fashion shows for American buyers. I lunched with Hattie Carnegie and Hazel Bishop. I was a young girl in Manhattan with the greatest job imaginable.”
  • Founded successful fashion accessory companies, Design Circle, Ltd. and R-2, Ltd., whose accessories were featured in The New York Times and Seventeen magazine.

Created “Gumi” bracelets, the U.S. mega-trend that sold thousands in the first week and millions total.
